Product Photography Cost in India: Studio vs DIY vs Freelancer (2026)
What product photography really costs Indian e-commerce sellers in 2026 — studio per-photo pricing vs a DIY phone setup vs a freelancer. Real numbers, hidden costs, and when each option makes sense.
Every new Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho or Myntra seller hits the same question: should I pay a studio for product photos, or shoot them myself on my phone? The honest answer depends on how many products you have, how often you add new ones, and what your time is worth.
We are Kenit Patel Photography, a product photography studio in Surat that shoots for sellers across Gujarat and India. This guide compares the three real options — a studio, a DIY setup, and a freelancer — using actual numbers, including the costs that usually get left out.
Short on time? For most sellers with fewer than 50 products, a studio batch is cheaper than it looks once you count equipment, editing, and re-shoots. See our pricing page or get a quote on WhatsApp.
Quick answer
| Studio (per-product package) | DIY (phone or camera at home) | Freelancer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | ₹0 | Equipment, typically ₹5,000–₹25,000 | ₹0 |
| Per-product cost | ₹180–₹250 (white background) | Your time + editing | Varies widely; often day-rate |
| Marketplace compliance | Built in (RGB 255 white, sizing) | Your responsibility | Depends on the person |
| Consistency across a catalog | High — same lights, same setup | Hard to repeat between sessions | Medium |
| Turnaround | 2–3 working days | Whenever you find the time | Depends on availability |
| Best for | 10–100+ products, launches, catalog refreshes | 1–5 products, very tight budgets | Lifestyle or on-location shoots |
Option 1: Studio product photography
A studio charges per product (or per image) and handles lighting, shooting, retouching and delivery in marketplace-ready formats.
Our current rates (white background, retouching included):
| Package | Products | Price | Per product |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | Up to 10 | ₹2,500 | ₹250 |
| Medium | Up to 25 | ₹4,999 | ₹200 |
| Large | Up to 50 | ₹8,999 | ₹180 |
Jewellery, model, lifestyle and food shoots are quoted separately because they need more setup time. Full details are on the pricing page.
What you are actually paying for:
- Compliance first time. Amazon's main image must be on pure white (RGB 255,255,255) with the product filling most of the frame. A studio shoots to that spec, so images don't get suppressed. (See our Amazon image requirements checklist.)
- Consistency. Every product in a catalog is shot with the same lights and angles, so your store looks like one brand rather than a collage.
- Retouching. Dust, lint, fingerprints, reflections and colour correction are handled before delivery.
- No equipment to buy or store.
You don't need to be in the same city. Most of our clients outside Surat simply courier their products to the studio and get images digitally within 2–3 working days — for example sellers in Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Vadodara.
Option 2: DIY product photography
DIY is genuinely the right call for some sellers. But "free" is rarely free.
Typical starter equipment (approximate market prices):
| Item | Rough cost |
|---|---|
| Light tent / shooting box | ₹1,500 – ₹4,000 |
| Two continuous LED lights | ₹3,000 – ₹10,000 |
| Tripod with phone mount | ₹1,000 – ₹3,000 |
| White backdrop / sweep | ₹500 – ₹2,000 |
| Editing app subscription | ₹0 – ₹800 per month |
That is roughly ₹5,000–₹20,000 before your first photo, and more if you buy a camera.
The hidden costs:
- Time. Setting up, shooting 4–6 angles, and editing each product often takes 20–40 minutes per product for a beginner. For 25 products, that's a full working day or two.
- Re-shoots. Off-white backgrounds, colour casts and soft focus are the most common reasons sellers re-shoot. Each re-shoot costs another session.
- Inconsistency. Natural light changes through the day, so products shot on different days rarely match.
- Editing. Getting a background to true white usually needs clipping or editing. If you outsource just this step, photo editing starts around ₹15 per image.
DIY makes sense when:
- You have only a handful of products and rarely add new ones.
- You're testing whether a product sells before investing in it.
- You already own good lighting and are comfortable editing.
Option 3: Freelance photographer
Freelancers range from hobbyists to highly experienced commercial photographers, so pricing varies a lot — some charge per image, many charge a half-day or day rate.
Good fit for: lifestyle images, on-location shoots (furniture, large machinery, a showroom), or creative brand campaigns.
Watch out for:
- Day-rates that don't include retouching.
- No experience with marketplace rules (white background values, image size, no text on the main image).
- Hard-to-repeat results when you need to add 10 more products next month.
Ask any freelancer for marketplace examples in your category and a written list of what's included before booking.
Real cost comparison: 25 products
Here is a like-for-like comparison for a seller launching 25 products with 3–4 images each.
| Studio | DIY (first time) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cash cost | ₹4,999 | ₹5,000 – ₹20,000 equipment |
| Your time | ~30 min to pack & courier | 1–2 working days |
| Retouching | Included | Your time, or ~₹15+/image outsourced |
| Risk of rejection / re-shoot | Low | Medium to high for beginners |
| Next batch | Same price, same look | Cheaper, if the setup is kept |
For a first launch, the studio usually wins on total cost. DIY starts to pay off only if you add products every week and are willing to build the skill.
How to get the best value from a studio
- Batch your products. Per-product prices drop as volume increases (₹250 → ₹180 in our packages).
- Send a reference. A competitor listing or a style you like saves back-and-forth.
- Tell the studio your marketplaces. Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra and Meesho have different image counts and preferences; one shoot can cover all of them.
- Plan secondary images. Ask for detail and scale shots, not just the main white-background image.
- Ask about rush delivery only if you need it — it usually costs extra.
FAQs
How much does product photography cost per photo in India?
White-background e-commerce photography typically costs ₹150–₹400 per product depending on the studio, city and volume. Our packages work out to ₹180–₹250 per product with retouching included. Jewellery, model and lifestyle shoots cost more.
Is it cheaper to do product photography myself?
Only if you already own lighting and have very few products. For a first catalog of 10–50 products, equipment plus your time usually costs more than a studio batch.
Can I get studio photos if I'm not in Surat?
Yes. Courier your products to our Surat studio and receive marketplace-ready images within 2–3 working days. We courier the products back after the shoot.
Do studio photos work for Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho?
Yes. We shoot to the strictest requirement (Amazon's pure white main image), which also works on Flipkart, Meesho and Myntra.
What should I ask a studio before booking?
Ask what is included (angles, retouching, file sizes), the turnaround time, whether marketplace compliance is guaranteed, and how products are returned.
